Getting Started with Dr. Ashley Hoyt

A brief history of acupuncture is just what the doctor ordered. In the next several weeks, Dr. Ashley Hoyt will share information on several different kinds of acupuncture. Acupuncture is a long-standing treatment for many illnesses ranging from high blood pressure to digestive issues, anxiety to malaise, sore throats to numbness. It’s been around a long time and we have a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get started.

A brief history of Acupuncture in the West

Practitioners in the West have had to overcome the view that since acupuncture is not currently quantified in the same ways as Western medicine, it’s somehow invalid. Unfortunately this is still somewhat prevalent in some modern medical practices. Chinese medicine was healing all kinds of difficult ailments long before the modern scientific method was instituted by universities, theorists and inventors. In the spirit of modern science, doctors used herbs and treatments that were proven through repeated use. Today we call this the process of deduction as employed by detectives.

Just like today, their level of technology limited their understanding of the world. Through experience and intuition, Chinese doctors successfully identified and treated the same kinds of illnesses we’re still dealing with today.

    What is “chi”?

The concept of qi (chi) that underlies the discipline of acupuncture forms the basis of many influences on the body, from energy to rhythm to chemical reactions and more. Because the body is intricately woven and interconnected, what affects one part can affect another. By stimulating points around the body, acupuncture unlocks the body’s own ability to heal itself, allowing qi to fuel our inner and outer healing.

Over the millennia many different approaches have risen to prominence in the field. We’ll discuss four types that are applied using our clinical acupuncture software called AcuGraph. These include:

    • Yuan (Source) Point
    • Jing-well
    • Ryodoraku
    • Single Point

    AcuGraph and Acupuncture

AcuGraph is a software that helps a practitioner become extremely precise in their placement of a needle. Taking into consideration what they want to accomplish, AcuGraph will identify the locations that are connected to a particular point. This is great for clients who want to understand acupuncture’s effect from an informed, scientific perspective. If you’re interested in seeing an example of how AcuGraph works, click here.

As Dr. Ashley Hoyt introduces these different approaches to acupuncture, let it stimulate your thoughts and open your mind to the possibilities.

  • Famous and Fabulous – the Secret Behind our New Red Door

What do you think of when you see red?

Anger? Heat? Fire? Here at the Clinic of Alternative Medicine it’s being used to make us ‘famous’!

Red is associated with romance in the West, good luck in China and it’s the color of weddings in India. In Chinese culture, a bright red hue symbolizes joy and fortune. Money is given in red envelopes and the color red is forbidden at funerals. Red roses have been given as a symbol of love – and we love these ones currently adorning our front desk.

red roses in key westIn Feng Shui, the South area is associated with the color red. This area of the home, space, office or in our case, clinic, is also tied to recognition and fame. Here is the Feng Shui Bagua map, showing the red section that lies in the South area of a space. Thanks to http://www.fengshui-macylu.com

The door at the end of the clinic in the corridor was one of those push bar, fire exit doors. I don’t have a before picture but it looked something like this:

    boring door
    Pretty boring, right?

As it is a fire door, we have to have it. But the flow of energy, chi, in any space, is constantly shifting. If the South area of our Bagua map was supposed to be linked with recognition and fame, was this door really doing us justice? We have a good social media presence, our website gets lots of visitors from people wanting acupuncture, massage and natural vitamin injections. (Dr. Ashley Hoyt administers vitamin injections directly into acupressure points, learn more here) but could we do better by keeping and attracting positive energy to this area of the Clinic?

    So we went to work!

We also added a bamboo decal. Bamboo is known as a Feng Shui ‘cure’ as it helps attract good energy. The Clinic of Alternative Medicine uses bamboo a lot in images on our brochures and website.

Look at the bright red! The bamboo decal adds a delicate touch. The wording is from a passage in Corinthians, “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

So, as an experiment, we’ll have to see whether this red door makes us famous! The first thing we noticed is a lot more energy in that area of the clinic. Instead of a receding,’dead’ space at the back of the corridor, the door attracts the eye and is a conversation piece. People talk about it. Here I am blogging about it. Will it bring us recognition and fame?

It worked for Elizabeth Arden. In the 1930’s and on, the fabulous Elizabeth Arden red door salons became as famous as the Coca Cola brand. Next time you’re in the Clinic, take a look at the door and tell us what you think! Meanwhile, it might not make us famous but it really does make us smile.

What do you think of the red door? Have you ever had success with Feng Shui? Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture?
