    Traditional Chinese medicine views the body from a distinct perspective which places an emphasis on maximizing the body’s healing ability and tending to aim for long–term healing. According to traditional Chinese medicine, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis result from the invasion of wind, cold, and dampness combined, which causes stagnated flow of qi (life force) and blood.  Acupuncture works through recovering the normal flow of qi and blood to relieve pain and improve physical function.  This interpretation of the condition can change the way patients think and feel about their illness and their treatment.     Most Americans are not aware of a very powerful threat hanging over our heads. It’s not terrorism, oil shortages or some other political issue. The clearest and most pressing danger lies in the fact that almost 50% of Americans have at least one chronic condition, while 60 million people suffer from multiple chronic conditions. Examples of chronic conditions are diabetes, cancer, glaucoma and heart disease. The number of people with chronic conditions is growing at an alarming rate.

    In the U.S. alone, 6000 new cases of type 2 diabetes, which is caused mostly by environmental factors, are diagnosed every year. But because the Chinese have been studying diabetes for so long, they have a deep understanding of the condition. Even in 100 B.C., “xiaoke,” which was once the term to describe diabetes, is mentioned in medical writings.

Mandy Miles wrote a great piece with her usual professional style. Ashley always enjoy reading Mandy’s work and her column ‘Tan Lines” was made into a great book.
