    When William Southmayd, M.D. experienced an ankle problem for 2 years that caused him to limp and restricted his activities, he thought he would have to undergo surgery. After having acupuncture treatments from Dr. Ashley Hoyt, he was pain free after 6 weeks. As a retired orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Southmayd is familiar with what is involved with surgery and was happy to find an alternative.

    Ray Jensen decided to try acupuncture after a shoulder injury. He reports that he was pain free after a few treatments.  He was so pleased with the results that he referred his wife for treatments when she was diagnosed with high blood pressure and did not want to take medication. Her blood pressure was reduced to normal and has remained stable for two years with no medication. (more…)

    A layman’s guide to understanding acupuncture

    Most people have at least a rudimentary understanding of acupuncture in that it involves needles applied to certain areas of the body.

    Fewer people understand it’s application and only a handful of people are expert acupuncturists. Ashley Hoyt, of Key West, is one of the latter.

    “Essentially, acupuncture is about influencing the circulation of ‘qi,’ or energy, through the meridian system,” she said. “Although I hesitate to say that’s the only definition because everyone understands it differently. Other people might liken it to promoting balance in the human body or fine-tuning the electrical system.”

    A New Look at Acupuncture

    The world of sports medicine is an increasingly specialized area of study for the application of the Chinese medical practice of acupuncture.

    “Athletes of all ages, from high school basketballs players to retired pro football players have experienced the healing benefits of acupuncture,” said Ashley Hoyt, an acupuncture practitioner in Key West. “Not only does it improve performance but it also accelerates healing which allow the athletes to continue to perform with less recovery time.”
