Headaches and migraines can strike at any time and since we are not with you 24/7, we want to share some tips on how to apply pressure to five top pressure points in hopes to relieve head pain, these are great techniques to use in between your Key West Wellness Center appointments.

Experiencing the pain and discomfort of a headache is incredibly common. If you’re looking for a more natural way to treat your headache, you may want to think about acupressure and pressure points.

Pressure points are parts of the body believed to be extra sensitive, able to stimulate relief in the body. Practitioners of reflexology, a discipline of Chinese medicine, believe that touching pressure points in a certain way can, improve your health, ease pain and restore balance in the body.

Reflexology is the study of how one part of the human body is connected to another. This means you might have to massage a different location — like your hand — to treat a different area, like your head. You’ll reach for the right pressure points to ease your pain.

How to use pressure points to relieve headaches

There are some well-known pressure points in the body believed to relieve headaches. Here’s where they are and how you can use them:

Union valley points are located on the web between your thumb and index finger. To treat headaches:

    1. Start by pinching this area with the thumb and index finger of your opposite hand firmly — but not painfully — for 10 seconds.
    2. Next, make small circles with your thumb on this area in one direction and then the other, for 10 seconds each.
    3. Repeat this process on the Union Valley point on your opposite hand.

This type of pressure point treatment is believed to relieve tension in the head and neck. Tension is often associated with headaches.

Drilling bamboo points are located at the indentations on either side of the spot where the bridge of your nose meets the ridge of your eyebrows. To use these pressure points to treat headaches:

    1. Use both of your index fingers to apply firm pressure to both points at once.
    2. Hold for 10 seconds.
    3. Release and repeat.

Touching these pressure points can relieve headaches that are caused by eyestrain and sinus pain or pressure.

Gates of consciousness points are located at the base of the skull in the parallel hollow areas between the two vertical neck muscles. To use these pressure points:

    1. Place your index and middle fingers of either hand onto these pressure points.
    2. Press firmly upward on both sides at once for 10 seconds, then release and repeat.

Applying firm touch to these pressure points can help relieve headaches caused by tension in the neck.

Third eye point can be found between your two eyebrows where the bridge of your nose meets your forehead.

    1. Use the index finger of one hand to apply firm pressure to this area for 1 minute.

Firm pressure applied to the third eye pressure point is thought to relieve eyestrain and sinus pressure that often cause headaches.

Shoulder well point is located at the edge of your shoulder, halfway between your shoulder point and the base of your neck. To use this pressure point:

    1. Use the thumb of one hand to apply firm, circular pressure to this point for 1 minute.
    2. Then switch and repeat on the opposite side.

Applying firm touch to the shoulder well pressure point can help relieve stiffness in your neck and shoulders, relieving neck pain and preventing headaches caused by this kind of sensation.

Other natural ways to alleviate a headache

Dehydration can contribute to your sinus passages drying out and increased pressure in your face. Increase your water intake throughout the day if you’re feeling under the weather. Fluids will reduce blockages in your sinuses.

While water may be your first choice to remain hydrated, you can also retain fluids through other foods and beverages including, broth soups, ice cubes, tea or water-based vegetables and fruits

Exercise can reduce sinus pressure. Physical activity can increase blood circulation and temporarily relieve congestion to ease breathing. Although uncomfortable to perform while being sick, physical activity can help to improve your recovery time and speed healing.

  • Acupuncture – A Preventative Medicine

Acupuncture basicsMaintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle was part of Dr. Ashley Hoyt’s early education. With older siblings already embracing the benefits of Holistic Medicine-sisters in Chiropractic and a brother in Massage Therapy, it was natural for Dr. Ashley Hoyt, A.P to enter the healing arts as well. While in college working in Massage Therapy and getting her degree in Psychology and Pre-Med, Dr. Hoyt was influenced by a prominent professor in the field of Acupuncture and the law of 5 Elements. She realized the diverse level of healing Acupuncture can provide and for over 25 years, she has practiced Therapeutic Bodywork and Acupuncture, helping her patients live a peaceful, pain-free state and to use wellness to avoid illness.

    HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
The body is composed of thousands of Acupuncture points that influence organ function and the body’s internal systems. The Traditional Chinese Medical version of Acupuncture would use it as a body maintenance tool or a tune up to help us feel our best. This type of preventative Acupuncture has been shown to stave off conditions like the common cold, nausea and much more.
The human body can be likened to a car engine as it has specific functions that require maintenance, care and attention. Ongoing Acupuncture treatments can be powerful for maintaining bodily systems and feeling your absolute best. At each appointment, the patient is evaluated to determine which points to utilize in their wellness treatments. An individualized treatment program is designed to activate and stimulate certain points to enhance their healing process. Energy flows throughout the body and when it gets blocked or becomes stagnant, health issues can arise. When energy is able to move freely, the mind, body and spirit will be peaceful and harmonious. Receiving regular Acupuncture treatments provides the necessary support the body needs.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture can be beneficial with addressing ongoing symptoms as well as preventative medicine to maintain optimal health. It is easier to stay healthy than get healthy, so it is the body, mind and spirit that benefit greatly from treatments, helping to prevent illness, pain and future injury. Regular Acupuncture treatments can help you to feel happier, improve digestion, strengthen your immune system, have more energy and feel more relaxed. You will sleep better and wake more rested. Even if you are rarely sick or experience pain, Acupuncture can give you a boost to feeling your absolute best. Some of our patients come for treatment when the seasons change or a few weeks before they travel. Other patients trying to avoid flare-ups in their aches and pains will continue their regular Acupuncture treatments after their pain is under control. Acupuncture treatments can be inexpensive, convenient, covered by insurance and very low risk with some significant results.

    ACUPUNCTURE INJECTION THERAPY
Acupuncture Injection Therapy may also be used to enhance the recovery process. These injections help to improve the flow of fluids and nutrients within the body, holistically facilitating the healing and pain management process. Dr. Ashley Hoyt, A.P is one of the few Acupuncture Therapists in the US to perform Acupuncture Injection Therapy with numerous successes.

    ACUPUNCTURE AND PREVENTATIVE CARE
Healthcare in the United States has been undergoing a significant transition as large portions of the population are now looking for wellness solutions that are proactive and forward-thinking. Many people now understand that maintenance of the body and prevention of illness require an integrative medicine and holistic approach. There has been a considerable rise in the popularity and notoriety of alternative medicine—specifically Acupuncture, which is seen as a viable solution to promoting and supporting health and well-being.
By balancing the bodily systems with Acupuncture it is possible to feel better every day, regardless of the symptoms you may be experiencing. A good diet, exercise, and getting enough sleep, can help you stay healthy, along with regularly being in touch with your body and mind. In this, acupuncture is an extremely valuable tool.

  • What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory beauty comes from within. When you start to age in a way that looks and feels unhealthy then it is possible the flow of Qi is not balanced within your body. When balance is restored, you will feel and look more radiant. On a physiological level, acupuncture has been shown to increase circulation of blood and life energy throughout the body. Increased blood flow can help to maintain healthy skin and muscle tone by sending nourishment, moisture, and “lifting” energy to the skin and muscles of the face. By increasing lymph flow using facial massage and combined with acupuncture this process can help strengthen the immune system as our skin is an essential part of our immune system.
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a painless, non-surgical method of reducing the signs of the aging process. Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture can sometimes be referred to as Acupuncture Facelift and in much more than just a cosmetic procedure. It is a rejuvenation and revitalizing process designed to help the whole body look and feel younger.

Hair-thin needles are inserted into particular areas of the face, ears, neck, hands, trunk, and legs along channels or meridians of energy called Qi. Specific points are chosen to manipulate the movement of energy in the body according to the individual’s needs. Thousands of years ago, the Chinese discovered that many meridians either begin or end on the face while some have internal branches that go to the face. Thus, practitioners of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture know how to specifically treat the face while simultaneously treating the underlying factors that contribute to the aging process.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture may erase as many as five to fifteen years from the face, with results apparent after just a few treatments. Fine lines may be entirely eliminated and deeper wrinkles diminished. Bags under the eyes can be reduced, jowls firmed, puffiness eliminated, droopy eyelids lifted and double chins minimized. Other likely results include: moisturizing of the skin with increased local circulation of blood and lymph to the face; increased collagen and elastin production, muscle tone, and dermal contraction; tightening of the pores; brightening of the eyes; improving of hormonal balance to help acne; reduction of stress evident in the face – bringing out the innate Beauty and Radiance of an individual.

    Course of Treatment

The recommended course of treatment (for the longest lasting and most dramatic effect) consists of 10 to 12 bi-weekly or tri-weekly treatments. You can expect an initial visit and following treatments to each last about 1 hour. The effects become most noticeable and lasting on or about the seventh session. Each person responds differently, depending on his or her condition and lifestyle prior to treatment.

Following the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions can prolong the results for five to ten years. It is often recommended to supplement the Facial Rejuvenation program with Facial Self-Massage and/or Acupressure, and a healthy diet.

    Microcurrent Facial Rejuvenation
Microcurrent is a pleasant and refreshing way to help the body naturally fight and
decrease the effects of aging on the face. This treatment uses a micro current unit to stimulate the muscles of the face to help relax tight muscles, firm muscles that have lost their tone, improve skin tone and circulation, and reduce or eliminate puffiness and fine lines. There is a slight risk of bruising and no recovery time after the treatment. A great alternative to other medical youth enhancing
treatments like Botox, Collagen or Restalyne injections!

Clients are also encouraged to come in for a Microcurrent Facial Rejuvenation
treatment as a preparation for any big event or occasion! With no bruising or recovery time it makes a great addition to any beauty regimen!

In the Before & After Photo, notice the furrow wrinkle (between the eyebrows) is flattened and smoothed out

    tremendously after only one treatment.
